Prior to the actual execution of the Gas Oil Platform Takedown and Recovery (GOPLAT) simulation exercise with the United States troops, a unilateral demonstration was conducted by the Philippine Navy (PN) and Philippine Airforce (PAF) on one of the observation posts situated off the coast of El Nido, Palawan. The GOPLAT takedown and recovery exercise is conducted in scenarios where the Malampaya Natural Gas to Power Project (MNGPP) is attacked and taken over by enemy forces. In such cases, a rapid and coordinated action is necessary to regain control of the platform.

Two types of insertion and extraction methods were executed during the demonstration, namely by air and by sea. On the early morning of April 16, the unmanned aerial system (UAS) of the PN performed an aerial reconnaissance operation, followed by the deployment of the Boat Assault Force, consisting of a SEAL team on board a rigid hull inflatable boat, and the Helicopter Assault Force, composed of one helicopter from the PAF carrying one SEAL team and high angle snipers. These operations were sequentially conducted to simulate the preparation of the platform up to the insertion of the operatives.

Upon insertion of the operatives, Close Quarter Combat (CQC) and Deck Clearing operations were initiated in respective sectors. In addition, a Multi-Purpose Attack Craft with a medical team served as the escort vessel of the Boat Assault Force. Meanwhile, a Fast Rope Insertion and Extraction System (FRIES) was also conducted, wherein troops were inserted to and extracted from the platform using a helicopter.

This same training event will be bilaterally conducted between Philippine and United States troops on April 19, followed by over the beach operations on April 27, 2023. The Western Command, through the Joint Task Force Malampaya, will continue to enhance its capabilities in safeguarding and securing the Malampaya Natural Gas to Power Project, which is the country’s economic crown jewel.
